The NC Weekend Warrior:
The Need For Speed

Looking for something to do this weekend? Every Thursday, the Visit North Carolina Blog will be taking a quick look at things to do around the state to help you plan your adventure. For even more events and happenings around North Carolina, go to VisitNC and click on 'events'.

The Festival Of Fast

Any NASCAR fan knows that this Sunday marks the running of the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Concord. But some may not know that the city of Charlotte goes completely race-crazy for the big weekend, hosting the Food Lion Speed Street Festival on its Uptown streets. Attendees will be able to meet some of their favorite drivers and get up close and personal with some of the cars. Big-time musical acts like Clint Black and Bel Biv Devoe will be performing. And of course, there will be plenty of food and fun and other entertainment for the whole family. Best of all, admission to Speed Street is completely free!

From Fiddlin' to Fishing

Elsewhere in the state, there's something to do for almost every interest. Up in the Iredell County town of Union Grove, the Ole Time Fiddlers and Bluegrass Festival will be taking place all weekend. This is the oldest continuous fiddlers contest in North America, so fans of traditional American music should definitely make plans to attend.

Of course, Memorial Day Weekend is the unofficial start of summer for many people, and the unofficial start of the 'season' out on the NC Coast. Two events this weekend celebrate some of our favorite coastal activities, with Swansboro hosting the King Mackerel Blue Water Fishing Tournament all weekend, and Manteo putting on the Outer Banks Beach Music Festival on Sunday. Popular Beach Music group The Tams is the headlining act.

Of course, it is Memorial Day Weekend, and many North Carolina cities and towns will be taking time out to honor those who have fought to protect our freedom. Fayetteville has gone one step further by spending the entire month of May honoring those who have served in our nation's Armed Forces, but on Sunday and Monday, downtown Fayetteville will put on its annual Glory Days Celebration to officially mark Memorial Day.

Put Me In, Coach!

Of course, baseball is another summer pastime... and while minor league baseball is big all over NC, people in Durham are getting an extra treat this weekend as they host the ACC's Baseball Championship over the weekend. The ACC has several of the country's top-ranked teams, including North Carolina (#6), Florida State (#12), Clemson (#13), Georgia Tech (#14), Virginia (#16), and Miami (#23). The tournament is being played at the Durham Bulls Athletic Park.

Meanwhile, of course, there the aforementioned Big Race, the 50th running of the Coca-Cola 600 at Lowe's Motor Speedway on Sunday at 5:45 p.m. The Speedway is hosting an entire weekend of events leading up to the big race, including Pole Night tonight and the CarQuest Auto Parts 300 on Saturday.

Summer Days, Summer Weather

The weather is looking absolutely fantastic for your holiday weekend, with sunny skies and highs ranging from the 70s in the mountains to the 80s in the Piedmont and along the coast. Only a slight chance of a passing thunderstorm is in the forecast.

Happy Memorial Day! Enjoy your weekend... get out and play!
