And you thought your new 50-inch flat screen was big.Yesterday, officials at Charlotte Motor Speedway announced plans to build an HD television screen that is 200 feet wide and 80 feet tall. In other words, a screen that's longer and taller than the White House. It will weigh 165,000 pounds and be placed between turns 2 and 3 on the track's backstretch.
"This is the biggest announcement we've ever made," said Speedway owner Bruton Smith. "This is not Texas-sized, this is Charlotte Motor speedway-sized. I don't see a lot of people doing this. It's a little expensive."
Smith won't say just how expensive, but the new screen's smaller sister, at the new Dallas Cowboys Stadium (160 feet by 72 feet), cost $40 million.
Speedway officials say on race day, the screen will display on-track action, replays, and the leaderboard... with a special emphasis on the Victory Lane celebration. But the potential of the mega screen has also spawned some non-race ideas, including the world's biggest drive-in movie. Either way, Smith feels the new attraction will transform Speedway functions into "must-see" events.
"This is going to ensure a sellout next year of all our events," he said.
Construction on the screen is set to begin after the October races and be completed in time for next May's NASCAR events.
